The Los Angeles Lakers edged past the San Antonio Spurs 88-84 in a thrilling NBA Summer League contest on July 7, 2026, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Both teams fielded young rosters eager to make an impression, and the game lived up to the Summer League reputation of high energy and close finishes.
The Spurs controlled much of the first half, leveraging their size in the paint. Rookie big man Alex Sarr (projected top pick) displayed his versatility with 14 points and 8 rebounds, while second-year guard Blake Wesley orchestrated the offense with 6 assists. San Antonio led 46-38 at halftime, but the Lakers came out firing in the third quarter.
Los Angeles rookie guard Bronny James Jr. was the standout player, finishing with 22 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals. His aggressive drives to the basket in the second half created foul trouble for the Spurs’ frontcourt. The Lakers outscored San Antonio 30-20 in the third quarter, taking a 68-66 lead heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair. With the score tied at 84 and 30 seconds remaining, Lakers guard Maxwell Lewis hit a step-back jumper that proved to be the game-winner. San Antonio had a chance to tie, but a turnover sealed the victory for Los Angeles.
“We showed real toughness coming back after a slow start,” said Lakers Summer League head coach Lindsey Harding. “Bronny was fantastic, and our defense in the second half was the difference.”
The Spurs fall to 1-1 in Summer League play, while the Lakers improve to 2-0. Both teams will have quick turnarounds as they continue their Las Vegas schedules.
