Craiova Edge Csikszereda in Romanian Super Liga Battle

CS Universitatea Craiova secured a hard-fought 1-0 win away to FK Csikszereda Miercurea Ciuc in the Romanian Super Liga on Sunday. A single goal early in the second half was enough to separate the sides in a tense, tightly contested match.

The victory keeps Craiova in the hunt for European places, while Csikszereda remain in the lower half of the table, but with plenty of spirit to take from their performance.

Match Overview

The first half was a scrappy affair, with both teams struggling to keep possession on a difficult pitch. Csikszereda, playing at home, pressed aggressively and forced Craiova into several early mistakes. However, the visitors' defence held firm, and Craiova gradually grew into the game.

The decisive moment came in the 49th minute. A well-worked corner was not fully cleared, and the ball fell to a Craiova midfielder on the edge of the box, who struck a first-time shot through a crowd of players and into the net. The goal was slightly against the run of play, but it was a moment of quality that proved decisive.

Csikszereda pushed hard for an equaliser, throwing bodies forward and testing the Craiova goalkeeper with crosses and long shots. Craiova, meanwhile, looked dangerous on the counter and could have added a second, but their finishing let them down. In the end, the visitors' defensive resilience earned them all three points.

Key Moments

• 49' – Craiova 0-1: A first-time shot from the edge of the box finds the bottom corner after a corner.
• 63' – Csikszereda chance: A header from a cross goes narrowly over the bar.
• 78' – Craiova counter: A breakaway ends with a shot saved by the goalkeeper's legs.
• 90+4' – Craiova clearance: A goal-line clearance denies Csikszereda a dramatic equaliser.

Tactical Story

Craiova set up in a 4-2-3-1, looking to control the midfield and use their technical players to unlock a deep-lying Csikszereda defence. The home side, however, matched them in midfield with a high-energy pressing game, making it difficult for Craiova to find rhythm. The decisive goal came from a set-piece, an area where Craiova had clearly done their homework.

After taking the lead, Craiova dropped deeper and invited pressure, relying on quick transitions to relieve it. Csikszereda's manager made attacking substitutions, switching to a back three to commit more players forward. It nearly worked, but Craiova's defenders stood tall and dealt with the aerial barrage.

Standout Performers

Craiova's goalscorer was the outstanding player on the pitch, not just for the goal but for his all-round midfield display, winning tackles and linking play. The centre-back partnership was also excellent, heading everything clear and making a crucial goal-line clearance in stoppage time.

For Csikszereda, the goalkeeper kept his side in the game with several smart saves, while the substitute striker caused problems with his physical presence and nearly scored with a late header.

Season Impact

This win keeps Craiova in contention for a top-four finish and a possible European spot. They showed the kind of resilience needed to grind out results on difficult away days. Csikszereda, despite the defeat, can take heart from a committed performance. They remain in the relegation play-off conversation but will believe they can climb the table with more displays like this.
