NK Maribor 1–1 FK Zeleznicar Pancevo
International Club Friendly | 4 July 2026, 23:30
Slovenian giants NK Maribor were held to a 1–1 draw by Serbian side FK Zeleznicar Pancevo in an entertaining pre-season friendly that saw both teams show promising attacking intent. The match, played in Maribor, provided a stern test for the hosts as they continue their preparations for the new PrvaLiga season.
First Half Action
Maribor started brightly and took the lead in the 19th minute through a well-taken goal from experienced forward Jan Rega. After a neat build-up down the right flank, the ball was cut back to Rega on the edge of the box, and he swept a first-time finish into the bottom corner. The home side dominated possession for much of the first half, but Zeleznicar gradually grew into the game and began to create chances of their own.
Second Half Response
The visitors equalised in the 54th minute when a swift counter-attack caught the Maribor defence out of shape. Striker Milan Spremo raced onto a long ball, held off his marker, and slotted calmly past the advancing goalkeeper. Maribor pushed for a winner, introducing several substitutes, but Zeleznicar held firm with disciplined defending. The best chance for a late winner fell to Maribor’s Ivan Brnić, whose header from a corner was brilliantly saved by the Zeleznicar keeper.
Assessment
The draw was a fair reflection of a match that ebbed and flowed. Maribor will be pleased with their attacking patterns but will want to tighten up defensively. Zeleznicar, a side from the Serbian First League, showed they can compete with top-tier opposition and will take heart from their resilience. Both teams continue their pre-season journeys with useful minutes banked for a large portion of the squad.
