Grasshopper Cruise Past Regensdorf to Advance in Swiss Cup

Grasshopper Club Zürich made light work of amateur side Regensdorf, romping to a 5-0 victory in the Swiss Cup first round on 16 August 2026. The result was never in doubt as the record Swiss champions demonstrated the gulf in class between the top flight and the lower leagues.

The Swiss Cup is known for its giant-killing potential, but Regensdorf were unable to produce a famous upset. Grasshopper controlled the match from start to finish and could have won by an even greater margin.

Grasshopper's Clinical Performance

The visitors took the lead inside the opening quarter of an hour with a well-placed shot from the edge of the area. Regensdorf tried to stay compact and hit on the break, but Grasshopper’s quality in possession wore them down.

A second goal arrived shortly before the break, this time a header from a corner. After half-time, Grasshopper stepped up another gear, scoring three more times to put the tie well beyond doubt. Their pressing game forced a number of errors from the home side, who nonetheless earned respect for their tireless work rate.

Key Goals

  • 14': Grasshopper open the scoring with a low drive from the right channel.
  • 38': A powerful header doubles the lead from a cross.
  • 55': A quick break results in a simple tap-in for the third.
  • 67': A well-struck free-kick finds the top corner.
  • 82': A late penalty completes the scoring.

Cup Magic Fails to Materialise

The Swiss Cup always carries the promise of giant-killing, and Regensdorf will have dreamt of a headline result when the draw paired them with Grasshopper. But the difference in experience and technical quality proved too large. For Grasshopper, the focus now shifts to their league campaign, with cup success a realistic ambition for a club with 19 league titles and a rich domestic history.
