Crotone suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 defeat to Audace Cerignola in a pulsating Italian Serie C encounter at the Stadio Ezio Scida on Friday evening. The home side twice held the lead, but Cerignola scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to snatch all three points in a thriller that swung one way and then the other.

Crotone started brightly and took the lead in the 22nd minute with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box. Cerignola equalised just before half-time, capitalising on a defensive lapse. Crotone restored their advantage in the 67th minute through a thumping header, but Cerignola refused to give up. They levelled again in the 79th minute with a low drive, and then, in the 93rd minute, a substitute slotted home the winner to send the away fans into delirium.

Tactical Story

Crotone played a high-pressing 4-3-3 and looked the better side for large parts, but their inability to hold onto a lead proved costly. Cerignola, using a 4-4-2, made effective use of their substitutions, bringing on fresh legs that changed the game's tempo. Crotone sat too deep after taking their second lead, inviting pressure, and Cerignola punished them. The away side's direct approach and willingness to shoot from distance ultimately paid off.

Standout Players

Cerignola's substitute striker was the match-winner, scoring the late goal and causing problems with his pace. Their central midfielder also had an outstanding game, driving his team forward. For Crotone, their playmaker was excellent, scoring one and assisting the other, but he was left to rue his side's defensive frailties.

Season Impact

This defeat is a significant blow to Crotone's promotion hopes, leaving them to dwell on two dropped points at home. Cerignola, on the other hand, celebrate a vital away win that boosts their playoff credentials and extends their unbeaten run. The Serie C table remains tight, and both sides will know that fine margins will decide their fate this season.
