Grindavík 3–1 Volsungur Húsavík
Iceland 1. Deild Karla – 18 May 2026
Grindavík delivered a commanding performance at home on Monday evening, securing a 3–1 victory over Volsungur Húsavík in the Iceland 1. Deild Karla. The result keeps Grindavík firmly in the promotion hunt, while Volsungur remain in the lower half of the table after a difficult outing in the coastal town.
First-half dominance
The home side started with intensity and pinned Volsungur deep inside their own half. Grindavík’s midfield trio controlled the tempo, and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring in the 24th minute. A well-worked corner found the head of central defender Jónas Pétursson, who powered the ball past the helpless Volsungur goalkeeper.
Ten minutes later, Grindavík doubled their advantage. Striker Kristján Örn Sigurðsson latched onto a through ball, held off his marker, and slotted low into the far corner. The home crowd erupted as their team went into the break with a comfortable 2–0 lead.
Volsungur fight back, but Grindavík seals it
Volsungur showed more fight after the interval. They pulled a goal back in the 57th minute through a swift counterattack. Winger Arnar Freyr Gunnarsson cut inside from the left and unleashed a curling shot that nestled into the top corner, giving the Grindavík keeper no chance.
Suddenly, the match became tense. Volsungur pushed for an equaliser, but Grindavík’s defence held firm. The decisive moment arrived in the 78th minute when substitute Hafþór Ingi Jónsson raced onto a long ball, rounded the advancing keeper, and tapped into an empty net to make it 3–1.
Standings impact
With this win, Grindavík moved up to third place in the 1. Deild Karla standings, just three points behind the automatic promotion spots. Volsungur, meanwhile, slipped to ninth, now only two points above the relegation zone. The result underlined Grindavík’s strong home form – they have lost only once at home all season.
Next up for Grindavík is a tricky away trip to fellow promotion chasers Fjölnir, while Volsungur will look to bounce back against bottom side KF. The league remains wide open, and every point counts in the battle for promotion or survival.
