Bolts unveil Varnado as they open Governors' Cup bid against Fuel Masters
Jordon Varnado begins his first Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) campaign as Meralco opens its PBA Season 50 Governors' Cup campaign against Phoenix Super LPG in a Group A showdown on Wednesday night at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
Tipoff is set at 7:30 p.m., with the Bolts banking on the familiarity they've built with Varnado after his stint with the team in the Basketball Champions League Asia 2025, where Meralco reached the quarterfinals.
The Bolts have made a habit of bringing back imports who previously suited up for them in international club competitions, hoping that continuity will translate into success in the season-ending conference.
Varnado impressed during last year's BCL Asia, averaging 19.7 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, and Meralco is optimistic he can carry that form into his PBA debut.
His first assignment, however, comes against a confident Phoenix side that opened its campaign with a 98-86 comeback victory over Magnolia last Saturday in Montalban.
The Fuel Masters erased a 16-point deficit behind a strong all-around effort from import BJ Johnson, who finished with 34 points and 13 rebounds, while Tyler Tio, Jason Perkins, and Ricci Rivero also played key roles in the rally.
Meralco expects a much tougher challenge this time around from a healthier Phoenix squad than the one it defeated, 93-86, during the Commissioner's Cup last March 21.
According to TigerScore sportsbook, the Bolts enter the matchup as 5.5-point favorites, while the over/under is set at 192.5 points.
Converge and Terrafirma will kick off the doubleheader at 5:15 p.m., with both teams aiming to improve to 2-0.
The FiberXers opened their campaign with a convincing 105-74 rout of Titan Ultra and will try to build on that momentum against a Dyip squad eager to bounce back after a narrow 101-100 loss to NLEX.
Terrafirma nearly completed a stunning comeback from 23 points down against the Road Warriors before falling just short, a performance that showed the Dyip remain capable of challenging despite the defeat.
Converge, however, enters the contest as the favorite. Casino Plus lists the FiberXers as 12-point favorites, with the total points line pegged at 212.0.
